Oral history and Open House at HCM
The Oral History Cafe (coffee, cream teas and home-made cake!) at HCM is open from 10th to 18th September, every day from 11am to 4pm, in the beautiful surroundings of Hermitage’s floating Pier House on the Thames.
While you enjoy a cuppa and a cake, you can listen to tales and memories from A Sense of Place, the oral history project about life on the Thames at Wapping, and add your own memories to our Memory Map.
There are also several special events over the week:
Friday 9th September
7pm: Poetry night at Hermitage. Come and hear poets perform work about history, memory, and rivers; or even read some work yourself! Booking recommended.
Saturday 10th September
11am onwards – drop-in bunting-making workshop for adults and kids. Make a bunting flag that shows what the river means to you!
2pm Local history walk with Ray Newton. Meet at Hermitage, and join us on a ramble around Wapping’s hidden history.

Nuthin Wong at HCM
Canadian Clive Hamman has been sailing round the globe in his vessel, a Chinese Junk replica called Nuthin Wong, for the last 17 years. The next leg of the voyage over the next 9 months is to get across the Altantic. The vessel is only 18m or so and 4m on the beam.
He is berthing at HCM on 24th (from about noon) and 25th and maybe 26th.
We’ve relaunched our website.
